Remote Backup Systems, the developer of RBackup Online Backup software for Managed Services Providers, has announced the availability of a Limited Source Code License for its popular Web Manager and E-Commerce PlugIns.

MSPs use RBackup to provide online backup services to their end users. White labeled and brandable, the software allows them to set up their own online backup services, hosting data backups in their own data centers.

The Web Manager and E-Commerce PlugIns provide a web interface so end users can sign up for service online, pay with a credit card or PayPal, download the software, and begin backing up immediately.

RBS Opens Emergency Hot Site for 2011 Hurricane Season

Remote Backup Systems, the founders of the online backup industry and developers of the RBackup and Mercury OEM Online Backup platforms activated its Emergency Backup Hot Site for use by its Service Providers in the path of hurricane activity this season.

Remote Backup Systems has offered this business-saving service to their clients dating back to hurricane Hugo in 1989. This resource is available to online backup service providers affected by natural disasters such as hurricanes, winter storms, widespread power outages, earthquakes, tornadoes, fires, and floods affecting their data center.

If an RBS Server goes offline because of a natural disaster, RBS can temporarily take backups from provider’s clients at the Hot Site near Memphis, Tennessee, so the Service Provider doesn’t suffer further. When the disaster is over and the providers’ servers go back online, they can download the backups and resume normal business.

Meteorologists are calling for an active 2011 hurricane season compared to last year, with 12 to 18 named storms and 3 to 6 major hurricanes. Highly Anticipated Online Backup Software Nears Public Release

(Memphis, TN June 9, 2010) Remote Backup Systems, founders of the online backup industry and developers of the RBackup and Mercury OEM Online Backup platforms today announced the status of its upcoming major release, RBackup Version Eleven, currently in beta testing.

“We don’t usually announce software releases early as release dates are contingent on how final testing goes, but this trial has been encouraging and as we near the end of our testing process, we are ready to start spreading the word and offering pre-sales to those who qualify,” said Remote Backup Systems CEO, Rob Cosgrove. “For the past six months our developers have been eating, breathing, and living this release. We are excited about the many enhancements.”

Cosgrove is speaking of Remote Backup Systems RBackup version 11 which is tentatively scheduled for release later this month. This major release includes many features and upgrades that have Service Providers paying close attention.

One of the most notable differences in this release from v10 is the licensing system, in which “clients” will now be referred to as “credits,” and will allow Service Providers to distribute Client software at a fraction of the previous cost. In addition, RBackup v11 introduces two new client editions, one built for Windows desktop computers, and one for personal computers.

RBackup v11 will offer free trial accounts, something Cosgrove says RBS has wanted to include with its product for some time. Distributing free trial accounts will not affect Service Providers paid credit counts, and will be a useful marketing tool.

Online Backup Estimator FREE Download

One of the problems Online Backup Service Providers have always had is the lack of a tool to estimate the storage space needed by their clients, and the time required to do a backup. The geniuses at RBS have written a tool that can estimate the size of the first full backup, the size of subsequent daily backups, and the time required to do them. It works with ALL online backup software (not just mine) and I’m giving it away FREE!

Some Service Providers have gotten around this problem by giving away 30 day accounts, then quoting a price at the end of 30 days, after they have seen how much data their users store.

Others quote tiered storage plans that include storage space quotas, and per-gigabyte charges for going above the quotas.

Increasing Prices in this Economy is Bad Customer Service

I have a competitor in my industry (Let’s call the company “Ashtray.”) who has just announced a January 1 price increase of 200% to 300% on most products. In an open letter to their customers, Ashtray also apologized for a recent software release that caused massive, repeatable data loss for many of their Service Providers, and announced that they were “pretty confident” that another new relerase should resolve at least 90% of the problems. I guess this means that they are also “pretty confident” that at least 10% of their users will still experience massive data loss.

The open letter (posted in their Forum, parts of which were forwarded to me by several of their readers) then goes on to explain why they raised prices. Here are their reasons.

We’re being forced to do so.
The price of gold and oil are up at least 3 to 4 times.
Business expenses are up.
Our competitors will raise prices. We want to be the first.

The letter goes on with a stern warning, “If you think dropping [Ashtray] and using another product is a “smart move”, I am sure that you will soon be forced to make another “smart move” from another product because none of us can escape the increase cost of running businesses worldwide, not even [Ashtray’s] competitors.”

I’ve had several phone calls from Ashtray’s customers asking if RBS were going to raise our prices. I said, “Why? Because we failed to properly plan for the recession? Because the price of gold and oil are up? Because we failed to change our business plan to account for current economic conditions? No. We are not going to raise prices.”

We reduced our expenses many months ago when this whole thing started just so we wouldn’t have to pass on the fruit of our lack of judgment and foresight to our customers. In fact, we were so successful in executing our plan that we can DECREASE prices after the first of the year while increasing support and development, and adding a lot of new features.

Borrowing a line from another competitors’ blog, “If you’re an Ashtray partner looking for better prospects, email me. And be sure to ask for the ex-Ashtray special.”

Is Unlimited Online Backup a Scam?

It must have seemed like jumping off a cliff in the dark without a safety line for the first online backup company who offered unlimited storage for a set low price. I think it was Mozy in the Summer of 2005 (I’m going to ramble a little and then come back to my point).

Since then a few others have followed Mozy off the same cliff (Carbonite, Zoogmo, BackBlaze, HP Upline). Several have hit bottom and died in the rubble of their customers’ valuable data (Zoogmo and HP Upline). So far, Mozy and Carbonite are still in free-fall. Carbonite is burning through gazillion$ in venture capital, and Mozy… well, nobody outside of EMC really knows about Mozy.

Mozy was consumed by EMC in September of 2007 in a deal that some skeptics (like me) found unlikely, chewed on a little, and then spit out with a new name – Decho. Josh Coats raised $1.9M in capital to start the company, and was bought out for a very high profile $76M a little more than two years later. So, either EMC thought they could get rich at $4.95/month or Josh owed EMC a whole lot of money for equipment he decided his business model couldn’t pay for. Nobody in on the deal has ever spoken candidly about it, which keeps us skeptics beating this dead horse in cheap, rumor-mongering, self-aggrandizing, run-on paragraphs like this one.

How can any online backup company afford to offer “unlimited” backups? Doesn’t “unlimited” mean unlimited? Can’t I store as many files as a want, use up as much bandwidth as I like, and eat terabytes of storage space for just $4.95/month?

Well, it turns out that those companies had a safety line when they went over that cliff. It’s called a “Fair Use Policy.” It’s a clause in their Terms of Use (or Software License Agreement) which acts like a sort-of safety net, allowing the companies to take action to prevent users from sending too much data. Most Fair Use Policies (also called Acceptable Use Policies) allow companies to take action against individual customers who use more storage space or bandwidth than “average” users.

None of the many boring Terms of Use that I read through actually spelled out just how far you would have to go to have your hand spanked. One would think the web would be full of customer complaints. Interestingly, though, I found very few complaints from customers who had run afoul of Fair Use Policies.

I DID find complaints about upload speeds, though, and a few bloggers who posited that the more data they uploaded, the slower the speed. So, I conclude that the companies are enforcing their Fair Use Policies by individually throttling bandwidth. That’s what I’d do. It makes fewer waves than slapping hands. But I also found rebuttals by Online Backup companies denying throttling bandwidth. I guess I’d do that, too, or have my PR people do it.

Topping my “Bending Unlimited” chart today are ElephantDrive and Carbonite. ElephantDrive won’t let you back up a file over 1GB (Home Edition) and 2GB (Home Plus Edition) even though they advertise an unqualified “Unlimited Storage.” Carbonite, whose Dave Friend is the undisputed and freakishly likable king of “unlimited,” won’t back up external hard drives. Among many other limits it spells out, their loquacious Terms and Conditions of Use (Oct 15 2009 revision) says they “backup only certain types of files.”

I think “Unlimited” was an unfortunate choice of word by some marketing geek who isn’t bothered by partial disclosure. It’s one of those “absolute” words that shouldn’t be followed by the phrase, “oh, except for…”

To be fair, customers should want their online backup provider to stay in business, so they shouldn’t complain about the Fair Use Policy. Such policies are necessary, IMHO, to prevent one user, or a raft of malicious users, from ruining it for the rest of us.

The dubious use of the word “unlimited” aside, Online Backup companies need a way to protect the vast majority of their users from the possibility of abuse by a few.

Fair Use is just fair; and “unlimited,” it turns out, is not.

Online Backup Specialist Activates Emergency Service for Service Providers; Warns of Threat Possibility

(Memphis, TN) Remote Backup Systems, the founders of the online backup industry and developers of the RBackup and Mercury OEM Online Backup platforms today announced the formal activation of its Emergency Backup Hot Site for use by its Service Providers in the path of hurricane activity this season.

This emergency offering comes after a threatening storm made landfall just to the southeast of Fort Walton Beach, FL early Monday morning. The National Hurricane Center has since released a final advisory for what had now been downgraded as Tropical Depression Claudette. Still threatening areas off the Atlantic are Hurricane Bill, currently located about 1080 miles east of the Lesser Antilles, and Tropical Depression Ana, about 75 miles south of San Juan, Puerto Rico. Tropical storm watches are in effect for much of the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

Remote Backup Systems has offered Emergency Backup Hot Sites as a business-saving service to their licensees dating back to hurricane Hugo in 1989. This resource is available to online backup service providers in areas who are in danger of a natural disaster affecting their data center.

If an RBS Server goes offline due to natural disasters such as hurricanes, winter storms, widespread power outages, earthquakes, tornadoes, fires, or floods, RBS can temporarily take backups from provider’s clients at the Hot Site near Memphis, Tennessee, so the Service Provider doesn’t suffer further. When the disaster is over and the providers’ servers go back online, they can download the backups and resume normal business.

New Changes to the Software Upgrade and Support Renewal Policy

After July 15 RBS will no longer accept renewals for Support Subscriptions that have been expired for longer than twelve months. A new software purchase will be required to obtain the latest version. Also after July 15, RBS will begin charging a fee for renewing expired Support Subscriptions equal to the pro-rated price, calculated monthly since expiration.

Expiration notices are emailed thirty days in advance, and again fifteen days in advance. In addition, RBS mails expiration notices thirty days in advance. If your mailing address or email address has changed since your last purchase, please email your new information to sales@remote-backup.com.

End of Life Notice for RBackup Versions 9 and Older

After July 15 RBS will retire RBackup versions 9 and older, no longer offering support for them. The current version of RBackup is 10.1.65. Support for these older versions will be limited to self-service only through the Online Knowledge Base and the Service Provider’s Forum. RBS Tech Support will no longer offer support for versions 9 and older.

Support Subscriptions for older versions will be honored through the end of the current subscription, but will not be renewed.

RBS encourages all Service Providers to upgrade to the current version immediately.

Expiration notices are emailed thirty days in advance, and again fifteen days in advance. In addition, RBS mails expiration notices thirty days in advance by snail-mail. Remote Backup Systems Inc. (RBS) announced a major upgrade available for download for the RBackup® remote backup software solution.

(Memphis TN) Remote Backup Systems, the founders of the online backup industry and developers of the RBackup® and Mercury OEM Online Backup platforms today announced the availability of the latest upgrade of their industry-defining RBackup® Online Backup software, version 10.1.65.

VARs and MSPs use RBackup® to offer Online Backup Services to their customers, hosting the online backup Server in their own offices or data centers.
