Remote Backup Systems’ CEO Offers Clues to Latest Online Backup Platform

Following on the heels of the highly successful launch of our RBackup version 10 a few weeks ago, RBS is now preparing to launch a brand new Online Backup product that will open lucrative new markets for our Service Providers.

Codenamed “Mercury”, our latest software is designed to compete head to head with the likes of Mozy and Carbonite in price, with higher performance and more features, including full support for backing up PC, Mac, and (in about 60 days) Linux.

Mercury isn’t an upgrade to RBackup. It’s an entirely new product designed for a different audience – home, personal, and mobile computer users. Oh, and don’t worry, we aren’t going to slow down on RBackup. RBackup will continue to be updated and supported for the foreseeable future.

Completely integrated with the Mercury server through Web Services, its agent footprint is very small – about six megabytes. Customers can sign up, pay, and manage their accounts online. File selection is automatic, and requires no input from the user.

Users can manage their backup accounts and restore files from anywhere on the web. There’s even a File Parking function that allows customers to upload files from any web browser to be downloaded later or shared with others by simply emailing them a link to the file.

Security is very tight. The Mercury agent compresses and encrypts files with military grade 448 bit encryption before sending them to the Mercury server over a secure connection using 256 bit SSL encryption, and storing them in fully mirrored, geographically distant, encrypted storage arrays back-ended by the very latest in Oracle 11g technology.

I guess you can tell that I’m really proud of my new baby. Want to see some snapshots?

I’ll tell you more in my next blog entry.
