RBS today announced a new initiative aimed at preventing the wonton destruction of letters and numbers, called the Typographical Conservation Initiative.

“Too many of us use the backspace key and delete key without thinking about the destruction we are causing in the typographical ecosystem,” said Rob Cosgrove, CEO of Remote Backup Systems, I’m guilty, too. Back there when I tried to type destruction, I accidentally hit the R instead of an E and I thoughtlessly backspaced over four innocent letters to get back to the R, then I murdered it without a thought, replacing it with a more “correct” E.

RBS encourages everyone to SAVE THE LETTERS. Instead of deleting, please cut and paste your typographical errors into a holding document where they can be recycled. Check your holding document before you type, to see if there is a letter you can recycle instead of using a new one.

As part of the Typographical Conservation Initiative RBS will develop an open source application that can automatically save mistakenly used letters erased with the backspace and delete keys. It will recycle them automatically as you type, thus saving millions of letters.

“We hope someday to be able to save whole words, or maybe even entire sentences,” explained Cosgrove.
