No Online Backup for Windows 8’s File History

We finally have authoritative details on the automatic backup system built into Windows 8. Called “File History,” the feature is far less capable than many of us thought it would be. The big news is that it WILL NOT do online backups.

Instead, File History keeps local copies of some (but not all) files, by default backing them up to a local storage device once an hour. It doesn’t even integrate with Microsoft’s own SkyDrive.

Designed mainly for use by consumers and not businesses, File History does not seem to have even the simplest of compliance, security and privacy features required by businesses.

This is good news for Online Backup Service providers and Partners of Remote Backup Systems. RBS Online Backup software already runs on Windows 8 and fully complies with HIPAA and other compliance regulations.
