New Report Forecasts Huge Growth for Remote Backup Services

A couple of weeks ago I was speaking with a potential customer who mentioned an article I wrote back in February called “Synthetic Full Backups – So What?” He said I had the concept all wrong, and that others had different definitions of synthetic backups. He suggested that I correct my blog. So, here’s my correction.

I am happy to announce tomorrow’s release of RBackup v10.2, adding native protection for Exchange 2010 and Active Directory 2008 through Volume Shadow Copy. This long-anticipated version also adds VSS support for multiple volumes and native SQL Server differential backups.

When companies consider offering Remote Backup services to their customers they do their research, mostly on the Web. There they see ads offering remote backup services as cheaply as $50 a year. Often they just give up, assuming prices are too low, there is no profit in the business, and competition is too fierce. Why would customers pay me $89/month for 20GB when they can pay $5/month for unlimited storage?

True file level deduplication will never be possible in a secure Online Backup system. Deduplication isn't even an Online Backup term. It comes from the world of Data Warehousing.
